White Pelicans

Pelecanus Erythrorhynchos

White Pelicans, unlike their Brown cousins, migrate to the interior of the United States to breed, a fact Audubon attributed to their decimation by humans.  Unlike the brown's, they feed in large groups, 'herding' baitfish in ever tightening circles, and then eating like shooting fish in a barrel.  This flock was fishing in a freshwater lake surrounded by the salt water marshes along Black Point Drive on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge.
