Great American Egret

Casmerodius albus

This magnificent bird was hounded to within an inch of extinction by hunters feeding feathers to the New York fashion trade in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Also known as the Great White Egret, they have rebounded since conservation efforts began during the second decade of the 20th century. The subtlety of the bird’s shape in the marsh reflects the full beauty of the close relationship between animal and Earth.
