Scrub Jay with Wild Orchid

'Florida Scrub w' Wild Orchids' 16 x 20, collection of Dotty and Tom Powers.

Garrulus floridanus

These amazing birds will eat out of your hand, unlike their western cousins in California and other far western states.  It has been suggested to me that this is due to the fact that they evolved when Florida was still just islands, before human habitation, and this did not develop an instinctual fear of man.   Today, Florida’s Scrub Jay populations are endangered. One of the largest colonies shares the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the Kennedy Space Center, and the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Nothing is built there but launch pads and support facilities, which have small footprints compared to the total land area. The rest is kept in its natural state.
