Atlas V

This was the first commercial launch of Lockheed/Martin’s new EELV (Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle) the Atlas V – one of the workhorses of the future. The name of the satellite let me have some fun with the colors. Commercial communications satellite owners are major users of launch systems. The USAF commissioned the EELV program for assured access to space, and has future missions booked on the Atlas V and Boeing’s Delta 4, as does NASA. Interestingly enough, to accommodate the government and save dollars, these two major competitors in these markets, have joined forces to create the United Launch Alliance (ULA). Each organization still uses its own launch systems, but shares administrative staffing and support functions.
