Female Pileated Woodpecker
Dryocopus pileatus
This magnificent animal made my day by first cleaning one wing, then the other, when I was at eye-level, about 10 feet away. It is the mirror image of
'Dress Right', also in this exhibit. The Pileated is similar to its larger cousin, the Ivorybill, which has been considered extinct, with the last known verified sighting in Louisiana in 1938. Some have claimed to have seen the vanished bird since then, including me, but no definitive proof has yet been provided.
