Mars Pathfinder Rover
Delta 2
This image was the first night launch I had captured on film since Apollo 17 (the last manned moon landing) in 1972, when I worked as a budding photojournalist for the Melbourne Times. When the Apollo program ended, I began producing video. NASA decided to go back to Mars in the late ‘90s, and it rekindled my desire to chronicle man’s infant steps to space. Pathfinder relayed live pictures as it roved the red planet, and that webcast became the first spontaneous ‘event’ on the fledgling internet, hammering NASA’s servers, as millions logged on to watch, world-wide.
