The Return of John Glenn

STS-95 Discovery

John Glenn, one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, launched onboard STS-95 Discovery on October 29th, 1998. In doing so, he became the oldest person to have flown in space (he was 77 at the time). He was the first American ever to orbit the Earth, in Friendship 7, on February 20th, 1962. That flight went for 3 orbits, and lasted 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds. The Shuttle mission, 36 years later, went for 134 orbits, 3.6 million miles, and lasted 213 hours, 44 minutes. He was a sitting U. S. Senator when he flew on STS-95.
