Another east Florida icon that has vanished, 'Annie' lived on the coquina rock that makes up the southern tip of Merritt Island, from the early 1960's through the turn of the millennium, when she collapsed in on herself, the victim of the use of the wrong type of concrete (when building on or near saltwater, you want to use Portland # 4 mix, which has no lime, a substance that allows the salt to leach into the concrete and rust out the steel rebar). Commissioned by a family with young children, it was sculpted by a self-professed 'warlock' from the Tampa area. I was inside her when I was a photog at the then-daily Melbourne Times.
